Understanding Glaucoma: The Silent Thief of Sight

Glaucoma is often called the "silent thief of sight" because it typically causes no pain and no noticeable vision changes until significant, irreversible damage has already occurred.

The condition is caused by damage to the optic nerve, frequently linked to elevated pressure inside the eye. Because peripheral vision is affected first, most people don't notice anything is wrong until central vision is also involved.

Regular eye pressure checks and optic nerve examinations are the only way to catch glaucoma early. We recommend anyone over 40, or with a family history of glaucoma, get screened annually.

While vision lost to glaucoma cannot be restored, modern treatments -- from eye drops to laser therapy to surgery -- are highly effective at halting further progression when caught early.
